The Sunflower Troupe is a volunteer group that supports the growth of local community theater in Cortez, Colorado. Formed in 2015 the troupe has enjoyed steady growth and success in presenting live productions at the Sunflower Theatre.
The Sunflower Troupe’s mission is to provide an outlet for creative community involvement while seeking to produce quality entertainment.
Our goals are to:
- Provide fun and entertainment to the community in a theatrical venue;
- Provide quality entertainment through live theatrical productions;
- Showcase local talent;
- Support theater courses that include classes designed to engage students of all ages and encourage interest in dramatic arts, and
- Become recognized as a significant cultural and economic asset by the local community.
History: When the Sunflower Theatre opened in 2015, Kim Welty, then director of the theatre, saw an opportunity to create a community theater group. Housing that troupe at the Sunflower would be an important connection that potentially could ensure the success and sustainability of such a venture. She partnered with Peggy Tennyson, who has a long history in professional theater, and the Sunflower Troupe was born.
From 2015 through 2018 the troupe presented six plays and two reader’s theater productions. Troupe numbers have increased steadily during that time. If you would like to be part of that continued growth, contact a member of the troupe’s steering committee using the information under the CONTACTS tab above.
“Speak the speech, I pray you, as I pronounced it to you, trippingly on the tongue: but if you mouth it, as many of your players do, I had as lief the town-crier spoke my lines. Nor do not saw the air too much with your hand, thus, but use all gently. …”Hamlet, Act III, Scene 2
